Natonal Tree Planting Day 2008

Shire of Mt Marshall

<v:Tuesday August 5th saw National Tree Day celebrated for the 5th time in the Shire of Mt Marshall. The Grylls gravel pit on Breakell Road was the site for this year’s Tree Day.  Children and staff from the Beacon and BencubbinPrimary Schoolswere joined by volunteers from the community in revegetating the site.

Participants from the two schools and volunteers numbered about 100.  Over 1500 seedlings were planted.  Councillor Len Cargeeg and landowner Rob Grylls were on hand to assist the youngsters with planting.  To plant this many seedlings was an excellent effort.  Diverse local native seedlings used for Tree Day were grown in the Shire of Mt Marshall Community Nursery.

The children had a great day which was capped off with a barbecue back at the Bencubbin Sports Complex.  Shire Community Development Officer, Beck Watson, did a great job cooking the BBQ and ensured all children and volunteers were well fed.  She was well assisted by Bencubbin 2007 Citizen of the Year, Mrs Ann Reid, as well as school staff and community volunteers.

Councillor Len Cargeeg spoke on behalf of the Shire of Mt Marshall and thanked everyone for their efforts.  Thanks must go out to everyone who attended and did such a great job for the community.

The Shire would especially like to acknowledge Western Power’s support for the event and thank them for their generosity.
