Partnerships

The key to the Shire of Mt Marshall’s natural resource management success is the partnerships it has developed with community groups, government agencies and non-government organisations.

Mt Marshall LCDC

Inaugurated in 1984, the Mt Marshall Land Conservation District Committee (LCDC) was one of the first land conservation districts gazetted in WA under the Soil and Land Conservation Act 1945. The purpose of forming the committee was to ensure that farmers would maintain control of conservation matters in their district.

The aim of the group is to promote strategic earthworks; erecting fences to protect waterways, badly degraded sites, remnant areas and bush corridors; planting trees and shrubs in recharge areas, revegetating salt affected areas with useful fodder, shrubs or pasture species and adopting cropping rotation which would better utilise the available rainfall.

The Mt Marshall LCDC has representatives on the NRMC.

Avon Catchment Council

The Shire of Mt Marshall area falls under the Avon Catchment Council (ACC). The ACC is a formal regional partnership of community, industry and governments to provide leadership and direction for natural resource management within the Avon River Basin. It is one of five regional partnership groups for natural resource management in Western Australia.

The ACC has a role in providing advocacy, facilitation and coordination, information brokerage, representation and the funding of on-ground projects within the region.

The Avon Natural Resource Management (NRM) Strategy provides a strategic context for investment in the natural resources and infrastructure of the Avon River Basin. The strategy provides for change from previous investment in small-scale local projects to regional initiatives delivered at a regional scale.

NEWroc

The Shire of Mt Marshall is a member of the North Eastern Wheatbelt Organisation of Councils (NEWroc). The NEWroc organisation is a group of seven local government authorities with a specific charter focusing on Regional development. NEWroc is made up of the Shires of Koorda, Mt Marshall, Mukinbudin, Nungarin, Trayning, Westonia and Wyalkatchem. The group is dedicated towards the development of a regional strategic planning process to allow resource sharing within the seven shires.

Natural resource management items raised by NEWroc are presented to the NRMC for approval, information or endorsement.

Some current NEWroc Projects include:

Auction for Landscape Recovery

A partnership project between Avon Catchment Council, CALM, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, Department of Agriculture, Department of the Environment, Greening Australia WA, North East Wheatbelt Regional Organisation of Councils, Murdoch University, University of Western Australia, WA Farmers Federation and WWF Australia.

The project is supported by the State and Commonwealth through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP).

The Auction for Landscape Recovery is a voluntary program for farmers in the north east wheatbelt and is open to all landholders in the Shires of Koorda, Mt Marshall, Mukinbudin, Nungarin, Trayning, Westonia and Wyalkatchem.

The Auction allows landholders to tender for funding to protect or enhance:

  • Nature conservation
  • Salinity and water logging control
  • Soil and water conservation

The project’s focus is on achieving multiple nature and land conservation benefits across the whole NE wheatbelt region.

Farmers can submit tenders in one or both of the two auction rounds between January 2004 – March 2005. $200, 000 is available for on ground works.
